ORGANIZATION
The International Association of Operative Plasterers and Cement Masons was founded in 1864 and represents one of the world's oldest and most noble crafts. The Local Union is 561 and is located in Marion Iowa.
NATURE OF TRADE
The principal work of Cement Masons is finishing the exposed concrete surfaces on many types of construction projects. These projects range from small jobs, such as the finishing of patios, floors, and sidewalks to work on huge dams, miles of concrete highways, foundations and walls of large buildings, airport runways, etc. Duties of a Cement Mason include:
· Screening, floating and troweling of cement surfaces;
· Work on concrete construction (buildings, floors, curbs, sidewalks, highways, etc.);
· Lying, spreading and finishing of concrete;
· Setting of curb forms and expansion strips in buildings, sidewalks and driveways;
· Sawing and scoring all concrete
· Operation of machinery (floats, riding troweling machines, cement guns, etc.)
TRAINING PROGRAM
The local apprentice program seeks to guarantee that all members within its jurisdiction are properly trained and that they uphold the standards of the craft throughout their profession. Cement Masons participate in a apprentice program where they learn all phases of concrete construction.
During the training period, a trainee may earn 65% of journeyperson's wages and progress to 90% during the last phase of apprenticeship. In addition, benefits such as health and welfare, disability, life insurance and pensions are provided.
QUALIFICATIONS
In order to apply for work as a Cement Mason, you must meet the following:
· Must be 18 years of age
· Must be a U.S. Citizen or in the process of becoming one
In addition, such characteristics as manual dexterity, conduct, desire and will to learn, creativity and the desire to be a craft worker are considered in selection of candidates.APPLICATION, SELECTION AND HIRING PROCESS
