ORGANIZATION

Local 2158 is affiliated with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America which was founded in 1881. Local 2158 is located in Moline, Illinois.

NATURE OF TRADE

The work of Millwrights involves the assembly, erection, installation and maintenance of all types of industrial machines and equipment. It includes presenting installations and moving production, equipment and machinery according to layout plans, blue prints and other schematic drawings.

Millwrights have skills in the use of a variety of hand and power tools, welding and brazing of all types of metals and use of welding equipment, optic tooling, precision measuring tools, hoists and cranes.

APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING

Millwrights and Technical Engineers receive training through a formal apprenticeship process. The Apprenticeship training program consists of 6,000 hours of on-the-job training. In addition, apprentices are required to attend supplemental classroom instruction in coursework established by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.

The training received during the apprenticeship includes the use of tools, layout, experience with machinery, experience involving engineering principals, optical instruments and related information, blue prints, maintenance of machinery and equipment and welding and brazing.

QUALIFICATIONS

In order to qualify for an apprenticeship, an applicant must meet the following

· Must be at least 18 years of age

· Must have a high school diploma or equivalent

· Must submit a copy of your birth certificate

· Must have an interest and aptitude in the craft

APPLICATIONS, SELECTIONS AND HIRING PROCESS

All acceptable applicants meeting the age requirements and education requirements, and after achieving a minimum score of 70% on the aptitude test are then placed on a pre-trial apprentice list and are referred to employment, when available. Placement of qualified persons on the pre-trial list are referred by descending order of ranking.
