ORGANIZATION
Local 182 is affiliated with the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers. Local 182 serves over 60 members in eastern Iowa. The apprenticeship program has been a value to our local union for over 15 years.
NATURE OF TRADE
The roofing industry covers damp and waterproofing from the foundation to the roof. Roofers use spray on, roll on, glue on, and mop on products ranging from hot asphalt to sheet rubber waterproofing foundations, walls and under floors.
Roofers and waterproofers work on a variety of types of buildings, protecting those facilities against water intrusion and ultimate damage to the structure and its contents.
Roofing in the commercial and industrial sector is generally of the built-up type or the single-ply category. Another area of roofing is the residential type. These applications can also be done in the commercial and industrial sectors as well. They include composition shingles, slate, tile and metal roofs.
Waterproofing is a specialty aspect of the roofing trade. Waterproofing can be below grade, which is usually foundation work. It can also be done on plaza decks, parking garage floors and other sections of a building where water or moisture protection is crucial.
APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING
The Roofing Apprenticeship Programs pride themselves in their product: an individual with job skill, knowledge of the trade and a positive attitude toward the union, the employer, the public and most certainly the customer - an individual with pride, dignity and self-respect.
Apprenticeship programs sponsored jointly by labor and management serve to provide the highly skilled workforce necessary to apply the quality roofing and waterproofing systems that keep America's buildings dry. The Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee administers each program and meets regularly to ensure proper operation of the program.
Roofers participate in a three-year apprenticeship program. In addition to training received on the job, apprentices attend supplemental classroom training in subjects related to the trade.
Beginning wages for roofing apprentices usually average from 40 to 60 percent of the wage paid to journeypersons. These rates are increased until the apprentice completes the training and becomes a journeyperson.
Once roofing apprentices master the practical and technical aspects of the work required for their skilled trade, they graduate to journeyperson status.
